How we adapt the curriculum and learning environment for children & young people with SEN

We adapt the curriculum and learning environment for pupils with SEN:

At Thornley Primary School, we believe that each child should be educated within their classroom alongside their peers.  Although withdrawal may be required, it should be for short timeframes and bespoke to the individual following careful teacher assessment.  Hoowever, ensuring each child has the resources to enable them to access this teaching is paramount.  This could be individual workstations, additional movement breaks, bespoke timetables linked to the ‘Now, Next, Then’ approach, visual timetables are examples of how we support all pupils in accessing their education successfully.

Some children do require 1 to 1 adult support.  When this is allocated, the aim is develop independence and to develop self-help strategies.

Many children with SEND thrive in different areas of the curriculum so it is essential all children access a full broad and balanced curriculum.  Pre-teaching is successful for some children, use of resources, images of film for others or giving them a question in advance to answer so they can be fully involved in learning.

More details on how we adapt information, our environment and curriculum can be found in the Accessibility Plan which you ca find in the School Policies section of our website.
